The evaluation section at the end of each unit of the Samacheer Kalvi 12th Physics textbook is where most of the public exam actually comes from. What each unit is really testing
Units 1 to 4: the electricity and magnetism block
This is the heaviest part of the paper and the most mathematical. Electrostatics rewards a clean understanding of Gauss law and where each standard field expression comes from. Current Electricity is dominated by Kirchhoff laws, the Wheatstone bridge and the potentiometer. Magnetism runs on Biot-Savart and Ampere circuital law, and Electromagnetic Induction on Faraday and Lenz laws plus AC circuit phase relationships.
If you are short on time, this block is where your hours belong.
Units 5 and 6: waves and optics
Electromagnetic Waves is short and largely factual, covering the spectrum, its ordering by wavelength and frequency, and the properties of each region. It is quick marks. Optics is much larger and covers both ray optics, including mirrors, lenses, prisms and optical instruments, and wave optics, including interference, diffraction and polarisation. Expect standard derivations and a steady supply of numericals.
Units 7 and 8: modern physics
Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter centres on the photoelectric effect, threshold frequency, work function, stopping potential and the de Broglie wavelength. Atomic and Nuclear Physics covers the Bohr model, energy levels and spectral series, mass defect and binding energy, radioactivity and decay law, fission and fusion.
These two units are conceptually compact and numerically friendly, which makes them excellent return on study time.
Units 9 to 11: electronics, communication and recent developments
Semiconductor Electronics covers intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, diodes, rectifiers, transistors and logic gates. Communication Systems is descriptive: block diagrams, modulation types, propagation and applications. Recent Developments in Physics is short and factual, covering nanoscience, robotics and physics in medicine.
Students routinely leave these until last and then run out of time. They are among the easiest marks in the paper. Do them early, not late.
How to work through the evaluation questions
- Attempt without the answer visible. Recognition is not recall, and the exam tests recall.
- For every numerical, write the formula on its own line first. This is both good exam habit and a check that you understand the setup.
- For conceptual MCQs, say the reason out loud. If you cannot state why the other three options are wrong, you have not understood the question.
- Keep a list of every constant and unit you get wrong. Unit errors are the most common avoidable loss in Physics.
Derivations deserve separate treatment
Physics differs from Maths in that a fixed list of derivations reappears every year. Treat them as a separate revision task from the numericals: write each one out from memory, then check, rather than reading them repeatedly.
Practice, not just reading
Reading solved answers builds familiarity, which is not the same as being able to produce them under time pressure. Work through the Class 12 section for chapter-wise tests as units are published, and until then use the book back questions as timed sets: twenty questions, twenty minutes, marked honestly.
