Chapter Summary

This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of computer networks, which are collections of interconnected computers designed to share critical resources, exchange data, and facilitate seamless communication. Modern networks play a vital role in transforming businesses, households, education, healthcare, and governance by enabling access to global information repositories and real-time services. The chapter also outlines the historical evolution of the Internet, tracking its journey from early military research projects to the ubiquitous digital platform it is today, along with the growth of mobile communication and social networking media.

Worked Methods

Method 1: Resolving a Domain Name to an IP Address

When an end-user inputs a human-readable web address (domain name) in a web browser, the system performs a name resolution process using the Domain Name System (DNS). First, the browser checks its local cache. If the entry is missing, it contacts the local nameserver provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). The query is then propagated recursively through root servers, top-level domain (TLD) servers, and authoritative nameservers until the correct numerical IP address is found and returned to the client.

Method 2: Mobile Network Handoff and Cellular Routing

In a mobile cellular network, land coverage is structured into contiguous sectors called cells, each containing a dedicated base station transceiver. When a mobile user moves from one cell to another during an active transmission, the network handles the roaming process. It automatically transfers the active radio signal connection from the current base station to the adjacent base station with the strongest signal. This prevents connection termination or service interruption, ensuring seamless transmission of voice and data.
